La Liga is now the only trophy that FC Barcelona have left to compete for in the last phase of this 2025-26 season, and as things stand, it seems only to be a matter of when the Blaugranes will mathematically wrap up the title, as they are already enjoying a 9-point lead over Real Madrid.
As a result, there is also a chance that the Catalans would be the winners of the league title even before they face Real Madrid in the last El Clasico of the season on May 10th.
If Barcelona clinch the title only one matchday before facing the Merengues, they can expect a guard of honor from their arch-rivals, something Alvaro Arbeloa’s team would not be looking forward to.
In such a context, Eric Garcia was asked about such a possibility as he attended an event for the promotion of a book.
As Mundo Deportivo has reported, the Spaniard was clear that Real Madrid should give them the guard of honor if Barcelona clinch the league title right before facing them:
“If they give us the guard of honour, it means we’ve already won it. Since I want to win it as soon as possible, that answers the question. When the opponent beats you, you have to show a minimum of respect. If it were up to us, we would do it, whoever the opponent is.”
Eric Garcia’s words make sense, as a guard of honor is a way of showing respect to a team that has won a title. However, with all the political and historical background of the two teams, it remains to be seen if Real Madrid would give Barcelona this honor if the circumstances demand.
