Ella Toone “felt sick” watching her team in a penalty the shootout that saw England beat Sweden and qualify for the semi-final of Euro 2025.
After being 2-0 down after 25 minutes, the Lionesses were struggling for ideas to break down a Sweden side that hadn’t lost a match since July 2024.
But after Lucy Bronze and game-changing substitute Michelle Agyemang found the net in the 79th and 81st minute respectively, it was England who went on to win the tie 3-2 in an chaotic penalty shootout.
“I feel sick, I still feel sick,” Toone said after the match. “But, you always have that belief in the back of your mind that you’re going to do it and you’re going to win.
“The girls were amazing and we had each other’s backs. I’m absolutely buzzing, but yeah, it was a horrible watch.
“As soon as I came off [the pitch], it was just not a nice place to be. You always want to be on the pitch and helping the team, but they put a shift in. They should be really proud of themselves for some of them playing extra time and taking a penalty.
“They should be proud of the ones who stood up and took a penalty. I felt like a fan, I was absolutely buzzing for them.
“I just wish I could have done more to help, but it’s a team performance and the game changers who came on definitely changed the game and made an impact as always. So we’re very, very happy.”
Toone has found the net twice in the tournament so far and has worked her way into Sarina Wiegman’s starting line up after coming on from the bench in England’s 2-1 loss to France on match day one.
The Manchester United midfielder praised the group’s ability to come back from adverse situations, having bounced back from the France defeat to now turning the quarter-final battle with Sweden around.
“I think we’ve got a bit of everything,” Toone added. “We’ve played in games where we’ve rolled teams over and scored three in the first half and then tonight they scored two in the first half and we came back, got a draw and then won on the penalties.
“We’ve got that team togetherness, so that definitely gets us through games. We’ve got that individual talent and people who can make something out of nothing. So, we’ve got different sides of our game.
“We didn’t want to go home and that was running through our minds right from the start. We didn’t want this to be the end of our tournament, that’s why people came off the bench and made a change to the game.
“We’ve got to take all that into the next game and we’ve got to start really fast we’ve, got to put in a massive shift like we did tonight and yeah we’re really excited for it already.
“Tonight was a bit mad but we got over the line in the end and you think in tournaments, you need that little bit of luck sometimes and the luck was on our side tonight.”
