Sheffield United supporters will be frustrated by the latest news involving former owner Prince Abdullah and current owner COH Sports.

Sheffield United would have been looking to focus on the pitch this summer and aiming to rebuild once again in order to sustain a promotion challenge next season.

Off-field issues have rumbled on for a few years now, beginning the 2024/25 season with a points deduction due to defaulting on payments to other clubs during the 2022/23 campaign.

COH Sports took charge of the club in late-2024, taking over from Saudi prince, Prince Abdullah. However, they have now been issued a winding-up petition over their own unpaid payments to Prince Abdullah with regards to that takeover.

The Blades were involved in a relegation battle for much of last season before former boss Chris Wilder eventually steered them clear and things appeared as though they would ease over the summer to bring about some optimism once again.

Despite the fact that Sheffield United supporters will inevitably be frustrated by the developments, there isn’t too much concern being expressed that it could lead to a complete derailment of their plans.

As FLW’s Sheffield United Fan Pundit Jimmy, AKA Blades Ramble, has explained, this isn’t necessarily new information for Blades supporters but does shine a bad light on the club.

Jimmy says: “It’s a huge concern but it is something that has been rumbling on in the background for quite a while.

“What I tend to think is it’s an ownership issue, in terms of I don’t think it will affect the first-team at this stage.

“I think it is a legal play from Prince Abdullah and, again this is just my opinion, I think it is a legal play to try and force the hand of some unpaid payments to him.

“I wouldn’t expect it to directly affect Sheffield United on the pitch at the minute.

“One thing I have to say is the optics don’t look good at all. I think it’s quite a poor look for the club and hopefully it can get resolved pretty soon.”

Sheffield United need to become settled

Having missed out on promotion back to the Premier League at the back end of the 2024/25 season, losing to Sunderland in dramatic fashion in the play-off final at Wembley Stadium, The Blades then experienced an extremely busy summer.

The appointment of former Reading and Hull City boss Ruben Selles was a gamble and it was a gamble that did not pay off, amid major changes to their squad.

Vinicius Souza, Anel Ahmedhodzic, Kieffer Moore and Jack Robinson were among the big name first-teamers to be sold with Rhian Brewster leaving on a free transfer and several loanees also departing such as Harry Souttar, Alfie Gilchrist, Jesurun Rak-Sakyi, Ben Brereton Diaz, Hamsa Choudury, Harry Clarke and Rob Holding.

Basically, Sheffield United at the guts ripped out from their squad and were left in a very difficult position that eventually required Chris Wilder to return to steer them into the middle-of-the-table.

There would have been hope that this season would have been much more settled with fewer issues to worry about and COH Sports finally able to get to grips with the club – but that has already taken a blow with just over a month to go until the season begins.
