It’s expected that Real Madrid will sign a new central defender next summer, with doubts over the continuity of Antonio Rudiger and David Alaba. They hold a strong interest in Liverpool’s Ibrahima Konate, but he is not the only one being followed by club officials.

Konate could arrive at Real Madrid as a free agent, given that his Liverpool contract expires next June, and this is also the case for Dayot Upamecano, who has less than 10 months remaining on his Bayern Munich deal.

Real Madrid have been linked to Upamecano in the last couple of weeks, and now their interest has been confirmed by Christian Falk.

Upamecano has made a number of high-profile mistakes in recent years, but during this period, he has also proven himself to be a very good central defender. He is of similar quality to Konate, so it could be a case of Real Madrid signing the one that does not sign a new contract at their current club.

It remains to be seen whether Upamecano is the defender signed by Real Madrid next summer, but if so, he would be a good addition to Xabi Alonso’s squad. It will be worth following whether there is contact between the two parties in the coming weeks.
