‘It’s impossible and nor do we care’ – Barcelona star responds to Florentino Perez over stolen La Liga titles comment | OneFootball

The rivalry between Real Madrid and Barcelona has once again spilled away from the pitch after comments made by Real Madrid president Florentino Perez created massive discussion across Spanish football.

During a lengthy public appearance earlier this week, the Madrid president made a controversial claim regarding league titles he believes slipped away from his club over the years.

“I’ve won seven Champions Leagues and seven La Liga titles out of 14, but I could have won all 14 La Liga titles because the rest were stolen from me,” Florentino stated.

Those comments reached Barcelona’s dressing room, and Fermin Lopez has become one of the first Barça players to publicly react.

What was said?

Speaking during an interview on Cadena SER’s ‘Què T’hi Jugues’, the Barcelona midfielder initially attempted to downplay the situation and avoid turning the debate into a larger confrontation.

“Yes, we’ve seen it like everyone else, but we always focus on what’s happening here,” he explained.

However, the midfielder later expanded on the topic and strongly disagreed with the idea that Barcelona’s league successes came unfairly.

“Everyone has their own view of things. I don’t think it’s right to say that Barça have stolen seven league titles because they had Messi, Iniesta and Xavi. 

“It’s impossible. Nor do we care. We’re on our own path; we don’t care what happens outside Barça, we’re very focused on our own business.”

The Barça midfielder was asked to elaborate on the matter, to which he added, 

“I don’t mind because everyone is entitled to their opinion, but I don’t think it was right to say that. 

“We’re very focused on what’s happening at Barça, who are going through a very good spell. I’m sure the trophies will come, and we’re very happy with what we’re doing.”

The midfielder also addressed the rivalry between the two clubs and insisted that tension and frustration are simply part of elite football competition.

“The rivalry is the same because I think it’s always existed, just as we are their rivals. 

“I don’t think we like them getting upset about these things either, because I believe that’s just football. We don’t disrespect any player or team. 

“I can’t understand it, but in the end, it’s normal to be angry when you lose. But when they win, they’ll do the same and we’ll accept it.”

The interview ended with perhaps his clearest statement of all when he was asked about suggestions that his energetic playing style could suit Real Madrid.

“I’m a Barça man through and through; it’s impossible for me to go to Madrid – I’ll always be a Barça man,” he concluded.
