Enzo Maresca has explained why Chelsea’s win against West Ham at Stamford Bridge on Monday night was “huge.”

The Blues responded from their defeat against Manchester City last time out to win 2-1 win thanks to Pedro Neto’s second half strike and an own goal from Aaron Wan-Bissaka.

The win was the first time the Blues have won a league game at home trailing at half time since December 2013, and they moved back into the top four.

Maresca on why West Ham win was “huge”

Chelsea came into the game on a run of one win in their last seven league matches and by all accounts having had a disappointing transfer window.

The first half wasn’t a good showing and the Blues found themselves 1-0 down thanks to Jarrod Bowen, following a big mistake by Levi Colwill.

The Blues showed some fight and character to come back in the second half, although Graham Potter made things difficult with the way he set the Hammers up.

Speaking after the game Maresca felt the fact Chelsea were able to break down a compact West Ham side and get the win was huge.

“Huge. The reason why is, first of all, because it was a tough game, especially mentally because it’s never easy when teams come here and sit back,” he told Sky Sports.

“You need to be patient. There is no space. There is nowhere we can attack so you have to move the ball and wait for the right moment. It’s not easy.

“I think we shot more than ten times in the first half and unfortunately, we missed the target. Then they score so it’s not easy. Second half we came back and I think we completely deserved to win the game.”

The Blues weren’t at their best but it was a massive win and attention now switches to the FA Cup on Saturday evening with a tricky trip to Brighton.
