Up next, Southampton faces Burnley in the 4th round of the FA Cup. But don’t expect a cakewalk, as the Saints would miss a vital defensive duo for the showdown.
A cheeky thought, haven’t Southampton’s attack been targeted solely for their poor season overall? After all, the Saints' leaky defense has conceded most times in the English top-flight this season.
But while you may think of improvements, Southampton's defensive line has taken a vital double hit.
Southampton's recent game against Ipswich can be seen as a story of two halves. Obviously, it ended with a much-needed win for the Saints, but it had its own setbacks.
While returnee Jack Stephens' injury is well talked about, Southampton faced another injury in the game. That too of one of the best Saints defenders, Taylor Harwood Bellis.
As he got substituted at halftime, you might have missed it, but the Englishman's injury can't be taken lightly. To the extent that, Harwood Bellis may miss the upcoming FA Cup fixture.
As quoted by the Daily Echo, Juric updated on Harwood Bellis' condition, saying: "He has a problem with the ankle and I was optimistic after the game against Ipswich but the things are not going well."
For now, Harwood-Bellis' return feels difficult against Burnley as Juric said: "We will see for next week but I think for this game he will not be ready."
Still, it’s not all doom and gloom for Southampton, as prodigy star Nathan Wood returns against Burnley.
Surely, the 22-year-old had a poor outing before being benched, now the Englishman feels ready to contribute again. Interestingly, in Captain Jack Stephens' and Harwood Bellis' absence, Wood feels certain to start against Burnley.
It’s no secret that this FA Cup game is a knockout game for Southampton—one slip, and they’re out. Can Nathan Wood step up in place of Bellis and Stephens and help the Saints to victory?
