Former Sunderland manager Jack Ross has been shortlisted for Scottish FA's chief football officer role, Daily Record reports. The 49-year-old is among the leading candidates to replace Andy Gould, who left for a FIFA role.
Ross led Sunderland from May 2018 to October 2019 after back-to-back relegations to League One. His side finished fifth in his first season, losing 2-1 to Charlton Athletic in the play-off final, and were beaten by Portsmouth on penalties in the EFL Trophy after a 2-2 draw at Wembley.
He was dismissed early in 2019/20 with the team sixth, and they later slipped to eighth before winning promotion the following year. Since leaving, he has managed Hibernian and Dundee United, reaching the Scottish Cup final with Hibs, and now works as Newcastle United's head of football strategy. Whether he would leave St James' Park is unclear.
Former Sunderland goalkeeper Simon Mignolet will retire at the end of the season. He made 101 appearances for the Black Cats from 2010 to 2013, keeping 33 clean sheets and helping them finish as high as 10th before joining Liverpool.
At Anfield he played 204 times and won a Champions League winners' medal. The 38-year-old has spent the last seven years with Club Brugge in Belgium, winning four Pro League titles and three domestic cups.
Brugge are second before the Championship Play-off, with 10 matches remaining. Mignolet is targeting a 20th league crown that would add a second star above the badge, with only Anderlecht having more on 34.
