Jack Wilshere has been appointed manager of League One side Luton Town, marking a symbolic homecoming for the former England and Arsenal midfielder, BBC Sport reports. The 33-year-old succeeds Matt Bloomfield, who was dismissed earlier this month after less than a year in charge, and signs a three-year deal as he embarks on his first full-time managerial role.
For Wilshere, the move represents a full-circle moment. Having begun his footballing journey at Luton as an eight-year-old before joining Arsenal’s academy, his return to Kenilworth Road carries both personal and professional resonance. “It feels like fate,” Wilshere said. “This club’s story inspires me, it’s built on belief, unity, and hard work.”
He inherits a side sitting 11th in League One after consecutive relegations from the Premier League and Championship. His task will be to revive the spirit of a club that, just two years ago, defied the odds to reach the top flight under Rob Edwards.
Joining him is Chris Powell, the respected former England international who takes on the role of assistant manager after a brief stint with Walsall.
Wilshere’s appointment caps a steady coaching progression since his retirement in 2022. After guiding Arsenal’s Under-18s to a Youth Cup final, he joined Norwich City’s first-team staff, even stepping in as interim head coach late last season.
His debut will come this Saturday against Mansfield Town, a fixture that could mark the beginning of a new era, both for Luton and one of English football’s most gifted, yet unfulfilled, former talents.
