Sunderland’s player ratings from the Tyne-Wear derby at St James's Park highlighted a resilient showing, with Omar Alderete the standout.
According to Sunderland Echo, Newcastle struck first, then Sunderland levelled after the break when Trai Hume, filling in at left-back, hooked the ball back for the equaliser.
Goalkeeper Melker Ellborg looked uncertain early and lingered over a goal-kick that Anthony Gordon closed down. His distribution suffered under pressure, though he was steadier after the interval.
Hume coped well out of position and showed composure, stepping into midfield at times. His involvement for the leveller capped a very steady display.
Lutsharel Geertruida began at right-back and struggled before half-time as Sunderland searched for rhythm. He improved markedly in the second half and carried a threat going forward.
Alderete defended soundly before the opener that he could do little about. Confident on the ball, he split lines with passes and looked assured throughout, earning a nine and Sunderland’s best on the day.
