James Forrest is more than worth another year at Celtic

James Forrest is more than worth another year at Celtic so yesterday’s news is most welcome. Sandman will also be delighted!…

The most decorated player in the history of Celtic Football club, the one and only James Forrest has signed a new contract to extend his time at the club by another year. No one can really argue with the decision by the club, which was supported by Martin O’Neill to offer Jamesy this well deserved deal that will see him playing on until at least 35.

James might be getting on a bit in footballing terms at 34, but he’s more than proven his worth, not just on the park, but off it as well due to the abundance of experience he possesses. Granted, he’s not the player he was in his prime, losing some – not all – of the blistering pace he was well known for, but James can still contribute to the side, as he showed in Sunday’s Scottish Cup semi final victory over St Mirren where a drop of the shoulder and a wee burst of pace got him to the byline to cross to set Kelechi Iheanacho for the decisive third goal, the first of four in extra-time in the 6-2 win .

James could also make history next year by becoming the ‘joint top goals scored’ in consecutive seasons player, which would be yet another proud accolade for the Prestwick born attacker.

Over the years James has had his critics during his long career in the hoops, but you can’t knock his contributions, which includes 564 appearances and 110 goals, not to mention numerous assists, and of course a cabinet crammed full of winners medals, more than any other Celtic player in the club’s unbroken history.

He cab of course add to that impressive haul, if we win the league, and overcome Dunfermline in next months Scottish cup final, and another year will give him the opportunity to extend that number even further. A record that only current skipper Callum McGregor is remotely close to equalling and overtaking.

Yesterday the Celtic captain joked that Jamesy would have to disappear before he could make any dent in his lead as every time that he wins a medal Jamaes Forrest does too so maintains his lead. Despite that Callum McGregor was clearly delighted that his longtime friend and teammate for club and country is staying around for another season.

James has been through the tough times as well as the good at the club, and he’s managed to impress several top class managers in that time. Big names including Brendan Rodgers, Ange Postecoglou, and currently Martin O’Neill, men who wouldn’t have him in their squads, simply just for the sake of it. Neil Lennon gave Jamesy his debut, worked with him during both stints as Celtic manager and remains a huge fan of the legendary Celtic winger.

As well as being a talented footballer, James is a truly dedicated professional, and just as importantly he is a proven winner. He’s more than worthy of his extended stay. He’s also Sandman’s all-time favourite player judging by the admiration he has for Jamesy’s prowess over the years.
