Brighton & Hove Albion are actively engaged in discussions with James Milner and his representatives regarding an extension to his current deal, as the veteran midfielder approaches the end of his contract this summer.
Despite enduring a second consecutive season disrupted by injury, the south coast club are understood to value Milner’s leadership, experience, and professional standards—qualities that continue to resonate within the dressing room.
The 39-year-old is reportedly open to a range of options. While talks are ongoing, it remains unclear whether any potential agreement would involve a traditional playing role, a shift into coaching, or a hybrid capacity combining both.
Milner, who arrived at the Amex Stadium on a free transfer in 2023 after an illustrious spell at Liverpool, has not hidden his desire to prolong his career beyond his 40th birthday. Brighton are weighing how best to integrate one of English football’s most enduring figures as they prepare for the 2025/26 campaign.
Milner featured prominently under Roberto De Zerbi during the first half of his debut season, registering 20 appearances before a muscular setback curtailed his campaign. That injury did not deter Brighton from extending his stay with a one-year contract last May.
The current term began positively, with Milner starting each of the first three Premier League fixtures under new head coach Fabian Hürzeler. However, he suffered a hamstring injury during the 1-1 draw at Arsenal in August—his 637th top-flight appearance. That match brought him closer to Gareth Barry’s all-time Premier League appearance record of 653, a milestone Milner is understood to still have in his sights.
Well known for his relentless professionalism and exemplary fitness levels, Milner’s desire to continue playing remains undimmed. With over two decades at the top level, he has represented Leeds United, Newcastle United, Aston Villa, Manchester City, and Liverpool—establishing a reputation as one of the Premier League’s most reliable and consistent performers.
“Milner has been one of the most vocal members of the squad on and off the pitch,” a source close to the club confirmed. Brighton’s coaching staff are said to appreciate the standards he sets for younger players, both in training and match preparation.
Brighton’s final home game of the season comes against Premier League champions Liverpool, adding a layer of poignancy as Milner prepares to face his former side once more.
With a three-way contest underway involving Brentford and Bournemouth, the Seagulls still have an outside chance of securing an eighth-place finish—potentially enough for European qualification, depending on the domestic cup outcomes.
While no final decision has been made regarding Milner’s next step, both parties appear aligned in their respect and willingness to find a solution that acknowledges his value on and off the pitch.
As Brighton look ahead to a pivotal summer, Milner’s future remains a storyline to watch—not just for sentimental reasons, but because his presence continues to offer practical benefits to a club blending youth with experience in its ongoing evolution.
