James Morrison says discussions over his West Brom future will wait until the club’s Championship status is confirmed.

According to ExpressAndStar.com, the 39-year-old has revived a season that looked bound for League One two months ago.

His third and longest caretaker spell began with a meek defeat at Oxford in late February, after which he publicly criticised his players. Since then Albion have gone eight unbeaten, including a crucial 2-0 win at Preston on Saturday, before facing Watford on Tuesday night. His two earlier caretaker stints totalled three unbeaten games.

He said: “I’m enjoying it but I’ve said all along I just want to get to the end target. Then we can talk about it. There is going to be a time for me to answer that, so I will do so in a couple of weeks.” He is believed to be keen on taking the job permanently.

An EFL charge over a financial breach has hung over Albion for more than a week, with a hearing due imminently and possible points deductions. It would be a tough call for chairman Shilen Patel’s Bilkul Football WBA to overlook him if he keeps Albion up, though the owners may feel a permanent move needs more thought.

Albion are targeting a final-day return for captain Jed Wallace, who injured his calf late last month. They hope he will be in contention to face relegated bottom side Sheffield Wednesday on Saturday week, with his absence, along with Karlan Grant and Mikey Johnston, prompting a rethink out wide. Wallace is out of contract this summer.
