Jamie Carragher Calls for Liverpool to Target Elite Left Winger

Carragher’s John Barnes Admission Sparks Debate

Liverpool legend Jamie Carragher has reignited discussion around squad balance after declaring that Arne Slot’s side “could probably do with a world-class left winger”. Speaking on The Overlap alongside Gary Neville, Ian Wright and Roy Keane, Carragher was asked which past footballing great he would most like to see return in their prime.

His answer was instant. John Barnes.

“There’s an account I follow on social media. He’s a Liverpool fan and he puts clips of Kenny, Hansen, Souness… 10-minute clips of games, and I saw one of Barnes against Manchester United in 1989,” Carragher said. “I think of where Liverpool are right now, and I think they could probably do with a world-class left winger. I’d say John Barnes.”

Liverpool supporters hardly need reminding of Barnes’ dominance on the left flank. Pace, control and creativity rolled into a single act. Carragher’s point is less a nostalgic nod and more an observation about where this current squad lacks a natural reference point.

Left Flank Rotation No Longer Enough

With Luis Díaz now at Bayern Munich and Cody Gakpo largely owning that left channel, Liverpool have survived rather than thrived in that department. Gakpo’s statistical return is strong, boasting an average Premier League rating of 7.57 according to Fotmob. That places him between Dominik Szoboszlai on 7.33 and Ryan Gravenberch on 7.65.

However, efficiency does not always equal intimidation. Opposition fullbacks once feared Liverpool’s left side, now they merely plan for it. Variation has been sacrificed for structure, and that is precisely what drives Carragher’s argument.

Real Madrid’s Rodrygo was considered in the summer and Liverpool were prepared to act if circumstances aligned. Instead, long-term planning won out. Preserving Rio Ngumoha’s development track was deemed smarter than a short-term fix. Logical perhaps, but ambition often asks for risk.

Defence Creating More Headaches Than Attack

While calls for a winger will continue, data from this stage of last season indicates that Liverpool’s real drop-off lies at the opposite end of the pitch. Arne Slot’s side have conceded more than Tottenham Hotspur, a sentence that would have sounded absurd not long ago.

Milos Kerkez and Jeremie Frimpong are still bedding in, Ibrahima Konaté’s inconsistency provides little certainty and injuries have disrupted rhythm. Slot is patching rather than perfecting. January will invite names such as Nico Schlotterbeck into the conversation, but until then experience must be leveraged. Andy Robertson remains the one reliable constant on that left-hand side.

Transfer Priorities Must Balance Pragmatism and Power

So who is right? Carragher or the numbers? The answer is both. Liverpool do require defensive reinforcement, but they also lack an undisputed force on the left wing. In elite football, compromises are punished. Slot knows this already.

If Liverpool wish to move from contenders to controllers, that left flank needs redefining. Barnes once did it with swagger. Carragher’s reminder is timely. The past is not there for comfort, it is there to set a standard.
