Japan have called up Kubo for this summer’s World Cup after an injury-disrupted season with Real Sociedad.
According to AS, the 24-year-old lost continuity following a lay-off and spent extended spells in the stands. Pellegrino Matarazzo has tried to lift him by starting him in four of the last five matches, yet he has not rediscovered his most decisive form.
Sunday’s meeting with Valencia at Anoeta closes the club’s home programme, the final chance to see the team in Donostia this campaign. Kubo, contracted until 2029, is keeping his counsel on his future, leaving all outcomes on the table.
So far this season he has logged 1,689 minutes across 26 appearances in LaLiga and the Copa del Rey, with two goals and four assists. Real Madrid retain 50% of any future sale and are monitoring his performances.
The season will end with a trip to Espanyol, after which the World Cup stage could draw fresh interest. La Real know the outlook for their number 14 will hinge on the project’s ambitions and the attention of major European clubs. Kubo will then join up with the national squad.
