After back-to-back defeats against Celta and Elche, Javi Guerra has been central to Valencia’s response, supplying decisive assists against Mallorca and Girona to secure four precious points in the battle to stay up. Valencia are five points above the relegation places.
Although he does not wear the armband, the midfielder has taken on responsibility at a critical moment. According to Superdeporte, his passes to Umar Sadiq at Son Moix and Largie Ramazani at Mestalla have made him the team’s joint-leading creator on five alongside Luis Rioja.
It has not been a straightforward campaign for Guerra. He had no minutes in Elche, then began on the bench in Palma before delivering a headed assist for Sadiq against Mallorca. Restored to the XI versus Girona, he released Ramazani to score.
Guerra has been influential without scoring, and this is already his best season as a provider. He has five assists against Getafe, Athletic, Levante, Mallorca and Girona, compared with three in 24/25 against Betis, Celta and Osasuna, and one in 23/24 against Almería.
Reflecting on the win, he said victories are hard to come by, teams have to suffer, and the result was very important because it gave the side some air. He felt Valencia lacked edge in the final third before becoming more clinical after the break, which brought confidence.
He also praised Dimitrievski, saying the goalkeeper’s saves secured the points and that he was very happy for him. Looking ahead, he wants to back this up next Saturday at Mestalla against Atlético de Madrid, adding that if they take three points it would give them more air, but they cannot ease off.
