Jean-Pierre Maillart, who served as Stade de Reims president in the 1990s after the club entered liquidation, has died aged 82.
Reims had filed for bankruptcy in 1991, with liquidation ordered on 11 May 1992. Maillart then stepped in to lead the reborn club.
He became the first president of the new era, part of a trio with Nicolas Gassmann and Jean Gaspard that ensured the club’s story continued.
“Without Jean-Pierre, Stade de Reims would have died,” said Nicolas Gassmann. “While I was a player at the club, I was the one who went to get him when things turned bad. He was exceptional. He put 50 million of his own money. It is an understatement to say he had a big heart.” He told L’Union.
The news emerged late on Wednesday.
