Jeglertz: It was tough, but we got the win

Andrée Jeglertz was proud of how his team ground out a 2-1 Barclays Women’s Super League win over Liverpool despite not quite hitting our usual standards.

In his pre-match press conference, our Head Coach had warned that the hosts could cause problems, and we found ourselves behind after the break despite dominating large spells at Anfield.

But second half goals from Iman Beney and Aoba Fujino earned City a deserved three points to move us back up to second in the WSL.

And Jeglertz felt we were a little off colour, but once again hailed his side’s determination to pick up a fifth successive WSL triumph.

He reflected: “It was tough, but at the same time I think we lacked a bit of energy in the group.

“Football’s a bit about desperation in everything you do, and I think we missed that a bit around the penalty box. We were close a couple of times, but we needed more players in the box.

“When they scored, I felt now we’re really doing things a bit sharper.

“But that says something about the team that, no matter what, not everything’s perfect but we’re still winning. We’ve come back from a goal down and got a win.”

Another lively performance from 19-year-old Beney helped City over the line on Merseyside, with the Swiss international getting on the scoresheet for a second time in as many matches.

The youngster had come off the bench to earn the Blues a 3-2 win over Arsenal last week and justified her selection from the start at Anfield with another tireless display out wide.

And Jeglertz continues to be impressed by Beney’s versatility and courage after an excellent start to life at City.

He said of Iman's display: “I’m so happy for her. She’s working very hard.

“Really, we’re not making it easy for her because she’s played in so many different positions.

“But she always survives and has this bravery in her that she’s in the box, she’s the one who’s finishing and has that desperation as well [to score]. I’m very happy for her.”
