Jermain Defoe has been appointed Woking manager, with Paul Bracewell as his assistant. PA reports that he takes charge of the National League club.
Defoe had recently been linked with a possible return to Tottenham. He has coached in Tottenham’s academy and worked in a caretaker capacity at Rangers in 2021 as part of a four-man coaching team.
Defoe said Woking is a historic club with huge potential, that he is thrilled to join an exciting project and eager to get started.
Chairman Todd Johnson said Defoe’s record as a player spoke for itself, but it was his view of the game, standards, leadership and player development that stood out. He added the club has a clear plan and believes Defoe is the right person to build on strong foundations in the next phase.
Interim bosses Craig Ross and Jake Hyde will remain on the staff alongside Dale Gorman. Ross and Hyde will lead Tuesday’s home game against Altrincham. As a player Defoe had spells with West Ham, Portsmouth and Sunderland, and scored 20 goals in 57 England appearances.
