Joao Gomes is leaving Wolves for Villa in a £38m move. The Brazilian has departed the club’s training ground in Portugal and will fly back to the UK.

According to ExpressAndStar.com, the switch would comfortably be the biggest ever between the West Midlands neighbours. Talks between the clubs accelerated in recent days.

Villa turned to Gomes after Amadou Onana suffered a long-term injury. Youri Tielemans then joined Manchester United for £38m earlier this week.

Talks have also taken place with Bayern Munich over a possible loan for Portugal midfielder Joao Palhinha. Atletico Madrid had been heavily linked with Gomes following Wolves’ relegation from the Premier League, but no deal emerged.

The 25-year-old is due to undergo a medical before completing the transfer. Manchester United had also been credited with an interest, but Villa have made the decisive move.

Gomes joined Wolves from Flamengo in 2023 and made 130 appearances in all competitions, scoring eight and assisting six. Villa are also on course to sign Freiburg midfielder Johan Manzambi in a club-record deal before the end of the week, while right-back Andres Garcia has joined Getafe on a season-long loan.
