Speaking at a Portuguese national team press conference, Tottenham’s Joao Palhinha had some choice words for his parent club Bayern Munich. The 30-year-old technically remains available to the German record champions after the end of his loan stint. Even if Tottenham decline to pull the €30m purchase clause in the agreement, however, it appears highly unlikely that he’ll head back to the Bundesliga.
Palhinha expressed the desire to remain with Bayern and fight for minutes this summer, but FCB head coach Vincent Kompany simply had no need for Thomas Tuchel’s coveted “holding six”. Bayern’s squad remains exceptionally deep in midfield and Kompany’s team continue to smash records as they blaze their way through the current Bundesliga and Champions League campaigns.
Palhinha utilized his chance in front of the microphones to blow off some steam about his failed move to Bayern. The current Spurs professional acknowledged his recent struggles with injury, yet got a swipe in at the German giants nonetheless. The 36-times-capped Portuguese international ended up making just 17 league appearances for Bayern last year.
“I was out of action longer than expected,” Palhinha said. “After that, I didn’t get the chances at Bayern that – in my opinion – I deserved. That ended up affecting my minutes with the national team. I think it’s always easier when one is playing regularly for one’s club to get the same amount of minutes at a national team level.“
