Joe Cole on the issues ahead of Eddie Howe’s side taking on Nottingham Forest.

The Newcastle United boss set to face Forest for an eighth time since arriving at St James’ Park.

NUFC having won six of the seven matches against Forest under Howe.

Joe Cole talking to Paddy Power ahead of Newcastle United facing Nottingham Forest in the Premier League:

“Still no wins for Ange Postecoglu at Nottingham First and, when I look at their squad, I just can’t understand it.

“Newcastle got the kind of result in midweek that they’ve been threatening for a while and, despite them starting badly in the league, I think this will be a home win for them.

“This should be a good game and it’s two teams with lots of creative players but maybe Newcastle can hit Forest on the break.

“If that happens then Anthony Gordon is good shout to score or assist.”

Joe Cole with two big predictions there.

Forecasting a win for United and Anthony Gordon to have a direct goal involvement in today’s match.

Like many of his teammates, Gordon had his best and most effective performance on Wednesday night.

Predictably, the usual suspects tried to undermine that thumping 4-0 away win in the Champions League as nothing special, when the fact is that that Union S-G hadn’t lost a match in their domestic league or the Champions League for seven months. Since mid-March 2025, playing 19 games with 16 wins and three draws.

The last three years have seen Union S-G with a very credible record in European competitions, with wins over the likes of Ajax, Liverpool, Twente, Eintracht Frankfurt, Rangers, Malmo, Union Berlin, Fenerbahce, Braga and Nice, as well as draws against the likes of Bayer Leverkusen and Roma.

This kind of European form reinforced by a 3-1 away win against PSV in their opening Champions League match this season.

In contrast, Forest are on a run of 18 matches (all competitions) where they haven’t kept a clean sheet in any of them, a run lasting over six months, whilst winning only three of the 18 games.

Whilst Newcastle’s results have been mixed this season, with three wins, three draws and three defeats, the underlying performances have been better than that and the trio of very narrow defeats have all came against top quality teams and indeed, in both the Liverpool and Barcelona losses, United deserved something from the games.

Many reasons why Newcastle should be able to beat Forest today and now they just have to go out on the pitch and do it.
