Joe Rodon says chess is sharpening his work at centre-back for Leeds United, encouraging foresight, patience and cleaner decisions. The Wales international has been a mainstay under Daniel Farke since arriving on loan, and at £10m ranks among his best ever signings at Elland Road.
“It’s a bit like being on the pitch, really. You’re always trying to think two or three steps ahead of the attacker. It keeps the brain moving.” He was speaking to Leeds United’s podcast.
Rodon sees the board as a defender’s mirror. It is about anticipation over reaction and the value of patience, since rushing a move tends to end badly in both.
Rodon has been a regular this season, adding stability. He has played most league games, with several clean sheets, and Leeds have conceded fewer goals when he plays.
Chess became a team-travel habit and a way to pass long away days. “I’ve got quite an addictive personality. Once I started playing, I just wanted to get better and better. It’s a great way to pass the time on away trips, but it’s also mental—you have to stay focused.”
He joked he is still waiting for more team-mates to challenge him and said it beats scrolling on a phone. “In chess, if you rush a move, you’re finished. It’s the same as a defender. You can’t just dive in; you have to wait for the right moment to make your move.”
