Joel Piroe and Wilfried Gnonto are back for Leeds United’s pre-season, yet exits remain possible. According to Leeds Live, it would raise eyebrows if either were still at the club on September one.
Their Thorp Arch return was expected, with deals to 2027 and 2028 respectively, and Piroe holding an optional extra year. They mustered only five Premier League starts between them last season.
Piroe has not started a league game for almost a year and Gnonto has not begun one since November. Both started and scored in FA Cup ties. Chairman Paarag Marathe has admitted sales are needed this window.
Gnonto was privately dismayed by minutes but avoided making a fuss. His prospects could improve if Daniel Farke reverts to a back four with wingers, although Harry Wilson’s arrival narrows opportunities. At 22, he understandably wants regular football.
Piroe rejected heavy January interest to fight for his place, yet played only 46 Premier League minutes after the window. His highlights were a goal against Norwich City and a Suriname debut. A Championship return looks less likely than a move abroad.
Little has emerged on Gnonto since Freiburg’s May enquiry, and agents for both are expected to gauge options. As things stand, the pair will travel to the US on Tuesday for the pre-season tour, aiding fitness and exposure. It also offers a slim chance to revive their Leeds careers.
