Leeds United striker Joel Piroe has vowed Suriname will return stronger after a 2-1 inter-confederation play-off defeat to Bolivia.
Suriname advanced from the CONCACAF qualifiers to Friday's inter-confederation semi-final, where the winners would face Iraq for a place at the tournament. The player said in a post, alongside match images, that it was a proud moment but not how they had imagined, adding that the support was huge.
Born in the Netherlands, Piroe represented his country at up to under-20 level before switching allegiance in January to Suriname through his father. He made his full international debut in the tie against Bolivia.
Piroe went straight into the starting XI and was heavily involved as Suriname led 1-0, only for the game to turn against them. The defeat ended their World Cup hopes.
Suriname had been seeking a first World Cup appearance in their history.
