Jon Stead has been appointed assistant coach at Huddersfield Town after Martin Drury took the job on a permanent basis.
According to Sunderland Echo, Stead will be part of Drury’s backroom team after rejoining the first-team staff earlier this year. Drury’s appointment followed the end of the League One season, and Stead now stays on under the new head coach.
The 43-year-old joined Sunderland from Blackburn Rovers in 2005. He made 40 appearances for the Black Cats, scoring two, with his first at Everton’s Goodison Park in April 2006 and his second at Southend United in August 2006.
After a loan at Derby County, he left for Sheffield United in January 2007. His career also took in Ipswich Town, Bristol City, Notts County, Harrogate Town and two spells with Huddersfield.
A Huddersfield academy graduate, he made his senior debut in 2002 and broke through in 2003 to 04 with 18 goals. That return earned a move to Premier League Blackburn Rovers.
Stead retired in 2021 after more than 700 senior appearances and 165 goals. He has since held assistant roles with Hartford Athletic, Tampa Bay Rowdies, Barnsley and Bristol Rovers.
A boyhood Terriers supporter, his continued presence on the staff is a popular appointment at the John Smith’s Stadium. Former Sunderland man Lynden Gooch is still on the books at the League One club and will work under Stead next season should he remain at the club this summer.
