Jon Uriarte has begun his second term at Athletic aiming to revive on-field performance, setting out a reshaped board.
According to El Correo, the 20-strong team comprises 14 men and six women, 30%, with 12 directors, including the president, retained and eight newcomers.
The standout change is the senior role handed to Javier Landeta, the Basque federation president from 2021 to 2025. One remit will be to improve relations with the Spanish federation, and he has a close relationship with its president, Rafa Louzán. He is likely to be asked to ease tensions after public disagreements over Supercopa revenue.
Uriarte also brings in Juan Alcíbar, one of the four economic leads in Ricardo Barkala’s team, and Eduardo Saiz, who was a member of the group that finished third in the last elections. Alcíbar has no responsibilities in finance, which remains with Ruiz-Longarte and Ibon Naberán, treasurer and vice treasurer.
Uriarte begins this term after the worst of his four seasons at Athletic. His first spell will be remembered for the gabarra sailing the estuary 40 years on after a Copa triumph. He also took the team into the Champions League with Ernesto Valverde, his only head coach, and is now seeking Valverde’s replacement.
