An academy graduate from Thorp Arch, Woodgate made 140 appearances for Leeds between 1998 and 2003. He then moved to Newcastle United before a high-profile switch to Real Madrid, followed by permanent spells at Tottenham, Stoke and Middlesbrough.

He retired in 2016 after 389 senior appearances and eight England caps. He lifted the League Cup with Spurs in 2008.

Post-retirement he worked as an overseas scout for Liverpool, then became Middlesbrough assistant in March 2017 under caretaker Steve Agnew. He stayed on after Agnew left and was appointed head coach in 2019, recording nine wins from 41 games.

Woodgate took charge of Bournemouth the following February on a deal to the end of the 2020/21 season, earning the Championship manager of the month award in April. After a play-off defeat he was not retained, with Scott Parker replacing him.

He later served as Carrick’s assistant at Middlesbrough from October 2022 to June 2025. The Manchester United staff also includes former England assistant Steve Holland and ex-defender Jonny Evans.
