Jonjo Shelvey has retired from playing at the age of 34 and been appointed manager of UAE second division side Arabian Falcons.

He endured a short Nottingham Forest spell after signing from Newcastle United in January 2023, making just eight appearances. According to Nottingham Post, he did not deliver the impact hoped for.

After time in Türkiye and with Burnley, Shelvey joined the Dubai-based Falcons last year. He has made eight appearances for them this season.

In a statement, Shelvey said he is excited to lead the Falcons, believes the squad is talented and has a clear plan to build something in Dubai. He described management as his long-term ambition and called this the ideal project to prove himself.

The change is part of an ambitious project under new ownership led by former Crystal Palace midfielder Jason Puncheon, who is co-owner and head of football operations. Puncheon said Shelvey’s top-level experience, character and hunger will inspire the team towards long-term success.

Shelvey replaces Harry Agombar, who becomes sporting director after a reshuffle. The Falcons are pushing for promotion, and their final five matches will be filmed for a behind-the-scenes documentary charting the start of his managerial career.
