Sunderland-born Jordan Henderson was injured amid England’s FIFA World Cup celebrations after the win against Mexico. An unused substitute, he fell while climbing back over the advertising boards during the post-match singalong with fans. He sustained a wrist injury and was taken to hospital.
He said in a post that it was a night to remember and praised the team’s display against many challenges. He added that he was proud to be part of a special group, thanked supporters and hinted he would stay with Thomas Tuchel’s team, noting another big one on Saturday.
As he recovers, here are brighter memories. Henderson faced Norway in 2012 at under-21 level, the nation who are England’s quarter-final opponents.
He was on the scoresheet against Senegal in 2022, scoring the opener.
As a Black Cat, he joined youngsters visiting the University of Sunderland, tried table tennis and martial arts and happily signed autographs.
In 2015 he launched the Eileen Smith Foundation at the George Washington Hotel, where nine-year-old Elliot Patterson met him.
And in 2011 he and Darren Bent fronted the red and white card display handed to all home fans for the Wear Tyne derby.
