England reached the World Cup quarter-finals with a dramatic win over co-hosts Mexico at the Azteca Stadium, as Jordan Henderson was taken to hospital after a freak post-match fall while celebrating with team-mates.
Speaking after the game, manager Thomas Tuchel said the former Sunderland midfielder injured his wrist in the incident and was being treated in hospital, adding that he did not yet know the next steps.
The Academy of Light graduate was an unused substitute. Two goals from Jude Bellingham and a Harry Kane penalty edged a five-goal contest in front of a 100,000 crowd.
England finished the tie with 10 men for more than 40 minutes after Jarell Quansah received a straight red card on VAR review for a challenge on Jesus Gallardo.
The night still carried mixed emotions, with the team’s mentality lauded and the occasion described as very special, although Henderson’s injury tempered the celebration.
