Jordan Nobbs completes free transfer to Newcastle
Former England international Jordan Nobbs has been confirmed as the latest Newcastle United signing, with the 32-year-old looking for a new challenge in the WSL2.
Jordan Nobbs is finally leaving the WSL after 11 years in the league and with 210 matches played in the top flight, she departs as the all-time record appearance holder in the league.
The veteran midfielder spent just over two seasons with Aston Villa, where she became a regular feature in the club that finished mid-table in back to back campaigns.
It is Nobbs’ time with Arsenal that she is most famous for though and after 13 years in North London the English star became one of the most experienced players in the league.
With the Gunners, Nobbs was crowned WSL champion on three separate occasions as well as an FA Cup winner four times.
The new Newcastle signing is also vastly experienced on the international stage with 73 caps for England, although she never won any major titles with the senior team.
After spending over 15 years in the top flight of women’s football, Nobbs has decided that it is finally time for a new challenge in her career.
Despite dropping down a division, the 32-year-old believes that trying to gain promotion with Newcastle could be even more challenging than playing in the top flight.
“Pushing them for promotion was a challenge that I wanted to be part of with this team.” Nobbs said after signing.
“It’s not easy to get up the leagues. No matter where you start, it’s tough. The women’s game’s growing and it’s harder than it looks, so for Newcastle to finish where they did last season, it shows that they’re growing.
“And after speaking to the club, finding out what their ambitions are, I wanted to follow that journey with them and help, hopefully, with my experience and push the team to get promoted.”
The Magpies finished fifth in WSL2 last year in their first season in the league following promotion.
With the WSL beginning the process of expanding to 14 teams from next season, the top two from the second division will automatically be promoted next year.
Jordan Nobbs becomes the third player to join Newcastle ahead of the 2025/26 season but it is hard to imagine that the promotion-hopefuls are done just yet.
Jemma Purfield became the first player to make the move to Tyneside this summer, with the former Southampton captain making the cross-country switch at the beginning of July.
Newcastle’s second summer transfer was another Southampton player, as two-time goal of the season winner Molly Pike followed her captain down a new career path.
The Magpies did release 11 players following the conclusion of last season which included the shock departure of club captain Amber-Keegan Stobbs.
