As Benfica coach José Mourinho continues to be linked with a return to Real Madrid, Jorge Valdano has questioned the move and highlighted the Portuguese's recent lack of silverware.
The 70-year-old former Argentina international and Real Madrid great said: "Florentino understands that Mourinho can lift the team's self-belief. But it is important to say that neither Florentino, nor Mourinho, nor football itself are the same as 15 years ago," he told influencer Rodrigo Rea.
He continued: "Mourinho won a Conference League five years ago (2021/22) and a Europa League 10 years ago (2016/17). Mourinho's trophy drought is even deeper than Real Madrid's."
Valdano added: "He is a bet of Florentino, who has always appreciated him and wants to give him a second opportunity."
The Portuguese has recently contacted Benfica's hierarchy to address a video released by Florentino Pérez's Real Madrid presidential campaign, saying he neither took part nor authorised the filming.
