Filipe Luís was sacked by Flamengo on Tuesday, a move that caught many by surprise, and Jorginho has already said his goodbyes.
According to Coluna Do Fla, the midfielder used Instagram to thank his former coach. He called it a privilege to work with Filipe Luís, said he learned from him, that they shared moments which will live in the club’s history, and wished him luck while pledging to support his success.
Despite a below-par start to the season, the decision stemmed more from behind-the-scenes friction. The relationship between the ex-coach and Bap, Flamengo’s president, began to wear in December 2025 amid a drawn-out renewal and a dispute over bringing the first-team squad back early for 2026. In recent days Bap also learned that Filipe Luís had held talks with Chelsea (ING) during that process, and that he was unreachable to the club for about three days.
On-field struggles added to the pressure. Bap wanted to dismiss him after the Recopa Sul-Americana runners-up finish to Lanús (ARG) on Thursday 26, but the call was delayed while a replacement was not yet in place.
Flamengo are now close to an agreement with Portuguese coach Leonardo Jardim, formerly of Cruzeiro, having sounded him out in December. He is expected in Rio de Janeiro on Tuesday.
