Italy face a third straight World Cup absence, and Jorginho says overconfidence after their European title played a part. "It is a thin line, because you can also become too confident. When that happens, you go the wrong way."
"In that year, after we won, before the triumph we were more humble. That is how I feel, and I include myself. We worked hard, we ran and ran," said the Flamengo midfielder and former Italy international, speaking to The Times.
"In the 2022 World Cup qualifiers, in our heads, we were doing everything right. We were controlling games, but I think we were a little too confident."
After missing the 2018 World Cup in Russia, Italy regrouped at Euro 2021, beating England on penalties at Wembley to lift the trophy.
The revival halted as they lost to North Macedonia in the World Cup play-offs, missing a second successive finals.
At Euro 2024 they exited in the last 16 to Switzerland, 2-0, then in qualifying for 2026 they were beaten on penalties by Bosnia and Herzegovina.
