José Mourinho’s future remains in debate, but Benfica still have reason to hope he stays.

Record writes that Mourinho has not replied to Real Madrid’s overtures and is focused on leading Benfica into the Champions League. The report says he is open to extending his contract if president Rui Costa makes the proposal.

No concrete offer has been put to the Setúbal-born coach, so the option of remaining next season is still open. Mourinho has, on several occasions, expressed a wish to stay at the Luz.

Inside the club there is a sense of alert, with Benfica closely tracking the saga. The report adds it might have been easier to manage had Rui Costa been clearer about the coach’s future.

In Spain, it has been claimed Real Madrid have already sounded out Mourinho and his agent, Jorge Mendes, though other accounts dispute that.

For now, Benfica’s attention is on the league, with two finals ahead against Braga and Estoril. Before the Braga match, Mourinho said he had not received any proposal from Real Madrid.
