Jose Mourinho is again being linked with a Real Madrid return this summer, amid claims in Spain that he has been offered to the club.
Diario AS reports that Mourinho is planning next season with Benfica, has told his players he wants to win the league at the Estadio da Luz, and would likely accept a Bernabeu comeback if Madrid made contact.
He has a year left on his contract, and Rui Costa intends to wait for next season to unfold before discussing an extension. This campaign is on course to end in third behind Porto and Sporting CP. Asked about his future, Mourinho sidestepped the question with a quip about the interviewer’s own job security.
A release clause that would allow him to join Madrid without a fee expires ten days after Benfica’s final match, likely 26 May. Even if that passes, any compensation is described as symbolic.
Most links are coming from Mourinho’s camp. His standing took a hit over his handling of Gianluca Prestianni’s alleged racist abuse of Vinicius Junior in the Champions League play-off, with most of the dressing room unimpressed with his behaviour. Florentino Perez’s long-held admiration remains, but appointing Mourinho would be a risky call for a club under pressure to get this decision right.
