Sheffield United won the Steel City Derby at Hillsborough and a former Owl has been criticised by Blades fans over complaints over their celebrations.

Sheffield United won the Steel City Derby at Hillsborough with quite a bit to spare on Sunday, but the comments of former Wednesdayite Josh Windass drawn the ire of many fans on social media.

The big match in the Championship this weekend was the Steel City Derby between the Owls and the Blades, but any hopes that Wednesday fans might have had that their team could rise to the occasion were thwarted by a comfortable 3-0 win for the visitors.

A crowd of 32,740 turned out at Hillsborough for the match, but United ended up cruising to a straightforward win which demonstrated just how much work any new owner of the club may have to do in the January transfer window should they want to give Wednesday any chance of surviving the drop this season.

An 11th-minute goal from Tyrese Campbell gave the Blades the lead, and the striker doubled his tally three minutes into the second half.

Wednesday were hardly able to lay a glove on their city rivals all afternoon, and a deflected shot from Tom Cannon in second half stoppage time sealed an extremely straightforward win for Sheffield United.

Speaking on Sky Sports after the match as Sheffield United's players celebrated their Hillsborough win, former Wednesday player Josh Windass said: "I'm not sure about all these celebrations.

"Sheffield United were the favourites to go and win today with the squad of players they've got and the situation they're in. But I thought they played really well, I thought they took their chances well.

"The strikers came on and made an impact, and it was a good performance."

But when Sky Sports posted his post-match comments to the social media platform X, Sheffield United fans had quite a lot to say about Windass's post-match comments. Some claimed that Windass wanted to go to Bramall Lane during the summer.

Others pointed out that winning a local derby away from home is exactly the sort of thing that both players and fans want to celebrate.

And others still wished to remind Windass that Wednesday's recent record in the Steel City Derby isn't particularly good.

This Blades fan meanwhile threw shade at Windass for abandoning Wednesday in the summer, having taken the chance to terminate his contract after his wages went unpaid.

The ease of Sheffield United's derby win was proof of how much work a new owner will have to do at Hillsborough

With Sheffield Wednesday in administration and likely to be under new ownership before the end of the season, these were certainly unusual circumstances for the Steel City Derby to be taking place, all the more so when we remember that Sheffield United also started the game in the relegation places following their abysmal start to the season.

But it's just as true to say that Wednesday's record in this particular fixture isn't good. They have now won just one of their last 11 meetings with Sheffield United - a 1-0 win in February 2012, when both clubs were in League One - remaining without a win in this fixture in almost 14 years.

And it's also worth recalling that Windass was asked the question by Sky's reporter "from a Wednesday perspective", so perhaps expecting total magnanimity from a former Owl was a little much.

But it is also true to say that Sheffield Wednesday have been operating with one hand tied behind their back all season as a result of transfer embargoes brought in as a result of the mismanagement of the club's former owner Dejphon Chansiri. These were only recently very slightly relaxed, allowing them to bring in Liam Cooper for this fixture.

That said, everybody knows that you can only ever beat the team that's put out in front of you to play, and the comfortable nature of Sheffield United's win was a demonstration of how much work there is to be done on the first-team squad at Hillsborough once new owners have been decided. Windass will have known that United players and fans were always going to celebrate this result regardless of the current health of the two clubs.
