Former Sheffield Wednesday star Josh Windass has reacted to Liam Palmer's impending milestone for the Owls

Sheffield Wednesday have had precious little to cheer about this season, although tonight's match at home to Watford will represent a rare moment of achievement and celebration for one reason.

It's been a disastrous campaign both on and off-the-pitch for the crisis-stricken Owls, whose long-term turmoil at the hands of former owner Dejphon Chansiri finally came to an end back in November but administration has beckoned since.

Chansiri's departure, and the subsequent entrance to administration, came after a nightmareish summer in which Danny Rohl departed before a mass exodus of the playing squad took place amid repeated missed wage payments and Henrik Pedersen was only able to compensate for significant exits with two loan signings.

Having also been struck with a litany of points deductions, Wednesday officially became the earliest side to suffer relegation in English Football League history last month and remain on -7 points.

The situation has left Wednesdayites desperate for fresh ownership, and while that saga could now be approaching its long-awaited conclusion, the dying embers of the campaign still need to be played out and it's one which all affiliated with the Steel City outfit will want to forget about - even if they may never be able to.

However, there's one milestone that is now set to be achieved in a rare positive moment for the Owls - and Josh Windass has reacted to it.

That milestone will be Liam Palmer's 500th appearance for Sheffield Wednesday when they host Watford this evening, with the 34-year-old having spent the entirety of his senior career with his boyhood club in blue-and-white.

It's a mightily-impressive feat considering the squad turnover at Wednesday in recent years, and it serves to underline Palmer's unwavering loyalty, longevity and consistency for the club.

He's just about seen it all, and even if the experienced defender would've doubtless relished the opportunity to tick off such a huge career milestone in more ideal circumstances, that doesn't take anything away from the achievement at hand and it's one which will be lapped up by both current and former teammates.

One ex-colleague is, of course, the aforementioned Windass, who spent five years playing alongside Palmer as Wednesday suffered relegation out of the Championship and then bounced back up before departing last summer in order to join Wrexham.

Windass still holds fond memories of his time at Hillsborough despite the nature of his exit, and friendships have been maintained.

In a video posted this morning via Instagram by Wednesday featuring Palmer discussing his best moments turning out for the Owls, Windass reposted the clip with a caption to show his appreciation for the ex-Scotland international.

The forward wrote: "What a guy. My brudda @Liamjpalmer❤️."

He left it short and sweet, and will not be the last former Wednesdayite to praise Palmer for his impending achievement as the Owls prepare to take on Watford.

Palmer is likely to finish the campaign with the most appearances in the club's history unless he succumbs to a late-season injury, and the defender will want to extend his stay beyond this term amid Wednesday's ongoing search for new ownership and fresh beginnings.

Josh Windass has fared well at Wrexham after Sheffield Wednesday exit

In comparison to many of his ex-teammates at Wednesday this term, Windass has enjoyed strong fortunes at Wrexham throughout the 2025/26 season as he bids to help the Red Dragons secure a top-six spot after achieving promotion to the Championship under Phil Parkinson.

The 32-year-old, who scored 50 goals throughout his spell in the Steel City, has found the back of the net on nine occasions from 30 appearances in the Championship while setting up a further five.

Windass arrived in North Wales as something of a marquee addition and he's certainly proved to be as much for Parkinson, even if Wednesdayites will remain bittersweet about seeing the versatile forward flourishing elsewhere.
