Joško Gvardiol, born January 23, 2002 in Zagreb, Croatia, has rapidly ascended the professional ranks to become one of the most promising defenders in soccer. Beginning his career at Dinamo Zagreb, Gvardiol secured two Prva HNL titles in the 2019-20 and 2020-21 seasons, along with a Croatian Cup victory in 2020-21.

In 2021, he transferred to RB Leipzig in Germany. He continued to impress by winning consecutive DFB-Pokal titles in the 2021-22 and 2022-23 seasons.
His consistent performances caught the attention of Manchester City, leading to a 2023 transfer for a rumored €90M, making him one of the most expensive defensive signings ever. At City, Gvardiol was a major contributor to the team’s 2023-24 successes. He logged over 3,400 minutes in all comps as the team clinched a Premier League title and victories in the UEFA Super Cup and FIFA Club World Cup.

We all know about Man City’s recent fall from grace, and Gvardiol has been powerless to stop it. He’s faced criticism for his pace, particularly on the flanks where he has been caught out by speedier wingers. With nine losses suffered from winning positions, Gvardiol’s resilience is needed more than ever by the reigning champions.
As Joško Gvardiol celebrates his 23rd birthday, he stands at a pivotal point in his career and City’s trajectory. The coming months will be crucial for both as they strive to overcome adversities and reaffirm their status in European soccer.
