The next transfer window is still a long way off, yet AC Milan is already starting to make moves to further strengthen Massimiliano Allegri’s squad in January. Calcio Mercato report that one of the priorities will be further strengthening the defence. With the coach opting to play with a three-man back line, depth becomes crucial.
Serie A and Coppa Italia commitments demand a stronger roster. Names such as Gabbia, Pavlovic, Tomori, De Winter and possibly Bartesaghi have all featured, yet Milan clearly want more security in that department.
The headline link is Liverpool’s Joe Gomez. Calcio Mercato write, “AC Milan continues to show interest in Joe Gomez: in the final days of the last transfer window, the English defender was on the verge of a move to Italy.” The deal collapsed when Liverpool could not secure a replacement before the deadline.

Reports now suggest Milan are “ready to make a comeback in January, capitalizing on the Merseyside club’s poor use of the 1997-born defender.”
Despite strong commitment to retain him, Gomez has been limited to just “two appearances for a total of 29 minutes in the Premier League so far this season.” That lack of involvement under Arne Slot will fuel speculation. Milan’s interest is no secret and this saga will gather pace.

Liverpool supporters will be split over this news. Some will be sceptical, questioning why a reliable defender is not getting meaningful minutes at Anfield. Joe Gomez has long been admired for his versatility, covering at right back, centre back and even in a back three. To see him play so little, as Calcio Mercato highlight, feels like a waste.
Others may be concerned that letting Gomez go would strip away vital depth. Liverpool have seen injuries derail seasons before, and losing an experienced player midway through a campaign could prove costly. With Arne Slot navigating both domestic and European competitions, rotation is essential.
From AC Milan’s perspective, excitement will be building. They sense an opportunity to acquire a Premier League-calibre defender at a time when his value is arguably suppressed. The Rossoneri know that Gomez is still only 28 and has plenty to offer. Allegri’s preference for a three-man defence suits his skillset, pace and anticipation.
Liverpool fans may ultimately be disappointed if the board cash in. Unless a replacement is secured early, the Reds could be left short. The coming months will be crucial in determining whether Gomez remains part of Liverpool’s long-term plans or becomes a central figure in Milan’s revival.
