Liverpool face a pivotal summer on and off the pitch, and fresh reports suggest sporting director Richard Hughes could be preparing for a new challenge once the transfer window closes.
According to reporting credited to Belgian journalist Sacha Tavolieri, Hughes is in advanced discussions over a move to Saudi Arabian giants Al Hilal. The development would bring an end to his time at Anfield earlier than originally expected, although Liverpool are believed to have been aware that such a possibility existed.

For now, Hughes’ focus remains firmly on Liverpool. The Scotsman is expected to oversee the club’s transfer business throughout the current window before any departure is finalised.
That responsibility carries significant importance. Liverpool are navigating a period of transition, having appointed Andoni Iraola as head coach, while also assessing areas of the squad that require strengthening ahead of the new campaign.

Stability behind the scenes is always valuable during such moments, and Hughes has played a major role in shaping Liverpool’s recent direction.
Tavolieri outlined the latest situation on social media, stating:
“Richard Hughes close to Al Hilal!”
“Liverpool FC’s current sporting director is in advanced talks with Saudi officials to become Al Hilal’s new sporting director.
“Saudi plan’s for Hughes is to let him work on the Reds’ next window before beginning a potential move.”
Those comments suggest Al Hilal are prepared to wait until Liverpool’s transfer plans have been executed before completing any agreement.
Questions surrounding Hughes and FSG’s football leadership structure have circulated for several months. Such discussions are inevitable whenever senior figures are linked with high profile opportunities elsewhere.
Liverpool’s hierarchy has built a reputation for planning ahead. If Hughes does depart for Al Hilal after the transfer window, it would be surprising if contingency measures were not already under consideration.
For supporters, the priority will be ensuring Liverpool emerge from the summer stronger on the pitch. Hughes appears set to remain central to that process before potentially embarking on a new chapter in Saudi Arabia.
