Neither player travelled to the United States for the Wrexham friendly, and both are now expected to build towards the Monaco game at Anfield on August 9. That gives Liverpool enough time to manage fitness without turning pre-season into a panic.

It is especially encouraging with Van Dijk. He has carried huge physical and mental demands for club and country, and protecting him now could pay off later. As for Gakpo, compassionate leave is bigger than football, and it is good to see that being respected.

On Alisson, the key thing is simple, keep him. The Juventus noise never made much sense from a Liverpool perspective. If you have one of the best goalkeepers of his generation, you do not create a problem for yourself by cashing in unless the situation forces it. This one clearly did not.

There is also something reassuring in how Iraola appears to be handling the group. Liverpool need authority, organisation and calm after a chaotic drop-off last season.
