Liverpool Transfer News: Wolves Set £51m Joao Gomes Asking Price Amid Midfield Search

Liverpool’s summer plans are gathering pace, with midfield recruitment again high on the agenda as the club assess options for Andoni Iraola’s first transfer window at Anfield. Among the names back under consideration is Joao Gomes, the Wolves midfielder who has been tracked over a long period and is now available at a revised price.

The latest indication from journalist Ekrem Konur is that Wolves want £51 million to sanction a sale. That represents a notable rise on the previous agreement reached elsewhere, and it changes the complexion of any potential move for a player Liverpool have admired for some time.

Joao Gomes Price Rises After Atletico Madrid Exit

Gomes had appeared likely to join Atletico Madrid earlier in the window, with a fee of €40 million, which is £34 million, understood to have been lined up. That move has since stalled, prompting a fresh round of interest and a higher valuation from Wolves.

Ekrem Konur’s update stated: “Manchester United have abandoned their €40M move for Éderson and shifted focus to João Gomes,” and added, “Liverpool are also interested, while his Atlético Madrid move has stalled.” The same update concluded: “Wolves value Gomes at around €60M, with both Premier League clubs monitoring the situation closely.”

For Liverpool, that places Joao Gomes firmly back into the frame, although the numbers now require careful thought. With Champions League football on offer in 2026-27, the club are in a stronger position to attract leading targets, but that does not remove the need for discipline in the market.

Liverpool Midfield Search Points to Specialist Profile

The attraction is understandable. Liverpool are looking at midfield profiles capable of adding bite, recovery speed and defensive security, particularly in deeper areas. Gomes has shown those qualities in the Premier League and remains one of the more combative options available.

His underlying numbers offer a mixed but interesting picture. He recorded 388 defensive contributions last season, alongside 107 tackles, 45 clearances and 194 ball recoveries. Those figures underline why he is viewed as a reliable ball-winner with strong instincts out of possession.

On the ball, Gomes posted a pass accuracy of 85.6 per cent. There are, however, limitations in his creative output, with only two big chances created across the campaign. He also won 50.4 per cent of his ground duels and 50 per cent of his aerial duels, which suggests his game is built more around intensity and disruption than complete midfield control.

Wolves Midfielder Valuation Could Shape Liverpool Decision

That is where the discussion becomes more nuanced. Liverpool are known to be considering several midfield options, and Joao Gomes may appeal as a specialist rather than an all-purpose solution. If the fee had remained closer to £34 million, the conditions would look more favourable. At £51 million, the calculation becomes tougher.

There is also competition for resources across the squad rebuild, and Liverpool will need to weigh Gomes against alternative targets, including Ayyoub Bouaddi, who remains under consideration. For now, Joao Gomes is a live option in Liverpool’s midfield search, but Wolves’ asking price may prove decisive. Further movement is possible as the market develops and clubs sharpen their priorities in the weeks ahead.
