Liverpool’s managerial situation remains under scrutiny as the season approaches its conclusion, with speculation growing around a potential return for Xabi Alonso. On the Anfield Index Media Matters podcast, Dave Davis and David Lynch discussed the possibility of Alonso replacing Arne Slot and how realistic such a move could be.
Xabi Alonso’s name has re emerged in connection with Liverpool, particularly given uncertainty surrounding Arne Slot’s long term future. During the podcast, David Lynch pointed to credible reporting that suggests there is at least some level of mutual interest.
“It seems there’s a keenness on his side to have a look at it if it’s available,” Lynch said, indicating that Alonso would be open to the role under the right conditions.
He also confirmed Liverpool’s prior interest, noting that “Liverpool were keen to speak to Xabi around the vacancy coming up post Jürgen”.
This suggests that the connection between club and coach has existed for some time rather than being a recent development.
Despite the speculation, Lynch made it clear that Arne Slot’s position is not yet determined. Liverpool’s hierarchy are expected to wait until the end of the season before making any decision.
“There’s going to be an assessment at the end of the season,” he explained, reinforcing that no outcome has been finalised.
While Slot secured the Premier League title in 2024 and 2025, recent performances have raised concerns. Lynch acknowledged the possibility of change but stressed that the process will be measured rather than reactive.
A key theme in the discussion was how highly Liverpool rate Xabi Alonso compared to their current manager. Lynch emphasised that this internal evaluation will ultimately determine whether a move is made.
“How highly do they rate Xabi Alonso, Liverpool?” he asked, framing it as the central question.

He outlined two possible scenarios. If Liverpool view Alonso as a standout managerial talent, the decision becomes straightforward. “If they do they’ll absolutely jump at him,” Lynch said.
However, if the club sees him as comparable to Slot, the situation becomes less clear.
“If they think he rates similarly to Slot… this is possible by the way,” Lynch added, suggesting that the decision is not as obvious as it may appear externally.
The timing of any potential move could be influenced by wider developments in the managerial market. Lynch highlighted that several top clubs may also be seeking new coaches, increasing competition.
“There’s potential for maybe Pep will do one more year,” he said, referencing uncertainty at Manchester City and the wider ripple effect across European football.
This creates urgency if Liverpool believe Alonso is their preferred candidate. “If they think Alonso’s the one, this is probably the time to act,” Lynch explained.
Despite strong links, Lynch cautioned against assuming that a deal is close. Reports suggesting an imminent appointment may oversimplify a complex situation.
“When you kind of saw some of that stuff pulled out, it did feel a little bit like it was absolutely nailed on,” he said, before clarifying that “you kind of read into the article, it’s maybe not that case”.
This reinforces that while the possibility exists, multiple conditions must be met before any move materialises.
Liverpool face a significant decision regarding their managerial direction. Arne Slot remains in position, but Xabi Alonso represents a compelling alternative should the club choose to make a change.
As Lynch outlined, the final call will depend on internal assessment, timing and market dynamics rather than external noise.
For now, the situation remains open, with Liverpool carefully weighing their next move.
