The Sindicato dos Jornalistas said in a statement that FC Porto’s proposed document for photojournalists is unacceptable, urging professionals to refuse it at Estádio do Dragão.
A professional press card, which certifies ethical, deontological and legal compliance, should be sufficient for accreditation to public events and is the only acceptable criterion to guarantee access.
Journalists are already bound by the Press Law and the Journalist’s Statute, and the profession’s ethical code underpins their work, so there is no need for clubs or institutions to demand written commitments.
The document contains clauses considered unacceptable because they restrict professional practice and could breach the Press Law, which is a crime under Portuguese legislation, while others are unnecessary and intolerable.
There is an appeal for the club to reconsider and comply with the law, accrediting card-holding photojournalists, starting with today’s Taça de Portugal tie.
Photojournalists covering Porto events are urged not to sign the document and not to work without dignified and safe conditions, while newsrooms are asked to back them and to avoid publishing images not produced by legally qualified professionals.
Despite disagreeing with the proposal, there is acknowledgment of FC Porto’s concerns over misuse of images from matches and a long-standing push to limit accreditation to holders of professional press cards for sporting, cultural and other events. If the club wants to restrict entry to those who misuse photographs at public-interest events, the suggested solution is to admit only photojournalists with a press card.
