Juan Foyth has suffered a rupture of his left Achilles tendon, the club said in a statement after medical tests. The Argentina international, a 2022 world champion in Qatar, sustained the injury against Real Madrid.
Foyth left the match at La Cerámica on Saturday in the 23rd minute, with initial assessments pointing to serious damage.
Head coach Marcelino García Toral described the loss as significant, highlighting Foyth’s experience in a young defence. He stressed they are more saddened for the player than by the result and that the team must overcome it.
Surgery is planned shortly and no timeframe was given, but the most optimistic outlook points to at least six to eight months out. If the rupture is complete, recovery could approach a year, which would leave Foyth with no chance of playing at the 2026 World Cup this summer.
It is the defender’s third long-term layoff with Villarreal, after previous issues in his right knee and right shoulder. Players and friends flooded social media with messages of support, notably fellow captains Gerard Moreno, Dani Parejo, Alfonso Pedraza and Santi Comesaña.
