Former Manchester United star Juan Mata is reportedly set to leave Western Sydney Wanderers for another club in the A-League.
Mata joined United in 2014 from Chelsea in a deal worth around £37.1m. He arrived at Old Trafford with a spectacular reputation as one of the best technicians in Europe at the time.
The Spaniard made 285 appearances across all competitions for United, scoring an impressive 51 goals in that period.
He helped the Red Devils win the FA Cup, Carabao Cup, Europa League and the Community Shield. Mata departed United in 2022 after the expiry of his contract.
His last game was an away clash against Crystal Palace in May 2022.
After departing United, Mata had spells at Galatasaray and Vissel Kobe in Japan before joining Western Sydney Wanderers in September last year.
Mata made his debut for Wanderers the following month during a meeting with Sydney FC. He netted his first goal for the side on 1 January 2025 against Macarthur FC.
After just one year with Wanderers, The Courier Mail now reveal that Mata is already on his way out, but he is poised to remain in the A-League.
The Courier Mail say that Mata has received an offer to continue with Wanderers but he has decided to reject it.
The 37-year-old is keen on continuing his career with Melbourne Victory.
“Wanderers officials wanted to re-sign the Spanish veteran, who made 23 appearances, but only seven as a starter, for Western Sydney last season.”
“However, it’s understood that the 37-year-old midfielder has instead opted to join a Victory side hoping to go one better in the upcoming A-League season after losing the past two grand finals.”
It’s understood that Mata will be handed more playing time by Victory boss Arthur Diles – a factor that may have influenced his decision to part ways with Wanderers.
