Manchester United’s hierarchy’s two biggest priorities ahead of next season are to find a permanent manager and strengthen their midfield.
On Monday, Jurgen Klopp’s agent, Marc Kosicke, claimed that the former Liverpool boss turned down approaches from United and Chelsea following his departure from Anfield.
It has been widely reported that Real Madrid are interested in hiring Klopp, who is currently Head of Global Soccer for Red Bull. United might have failed in their bid to convince Klopp, but his next potential move could fix their second concern: the midfield.
According to a report in Spain, as relayed by Football365, Jude Bellingham has “agreed in principle” to join Manchester United in the summer if Real Madrid secure the services of Jurgen Klopp.
It has been a rough season for Los Blancos and Bellingham. Early this season, Real Madrid sacked Xabi Alonso and placed Alvaro Arbeloa in charge of the first team.
At the time, it was suggested that there was a rift between Bellingham, who is enduring an injury-laden campaign, and Alonso. Now, it is being claimed that the Englishman would not be part of Klopp’s plans if the German were to accept the Spanish giants’ job offer.
It is claimed that Bellingham “has a deal in place to leave Real Madrid if Jurgen Klopp takes over as manager.”
The England international has “reached an agreement in principle with Manchester United to facilitate an immediate departure should a change in management occur.”
The report adds: “The move is contingent solely on Klopp’s arrival. If the German coach does not land at the Santiago Bernabéu, the midfielder intends to remain at the club.”
Bellingham allegedly prefers to “get ahead of the curve” and find a club where he would be handed a prominent role.
It is understood United are prepared to offer him that status and build their project around him.
Former United manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer tried to sign Bellingham after he broke through at Birmingham City. Eventually, the 22-year-old chose Borussia Dortmund before sealing a €103 million move to Real, where he has already lifted the Champions League trophy.
There are question marks over Bellingham’s attitude, but as far as on-field quality is concerned, there are only a few midfielders better than the Real Madrid superstar.
