Júnior has condemned Flamengo’s decision to sack coach Filipe Luís, accusing president Luiz Eduardo Baptista, Bap, of acting as if he were bigger than the institution and calling the dismissal disrespectful.

According to Globo.com, the club idol said Filipe made mistakes, yet the episode reflected worse on those who made the call. He accepted the president’s right to dismiss coaches but urged sensitivity, especially when dealing with an idol.

He argued the club should have acted before the press conference to protect the image of a figure closely identified with Flamengo, adding the manner created needless exposure and isolation and damaged an institution that preaches professionalism.

Júnior highlighted Filipe’s seven years as a player and roughly 15 months in charge, noting he himself had questioned some selections, particularly against Club Atlético Lanús. He stressed outsiders do not see training and lack full information.

Under Filipe, Flamengo won five trophies, the 2024 Copa do Brasil, the 2025 Supercopa, the 2025 Carioca, the 2025 Libertadores and the 2025 Brasileirão, making him the club’s joint second most successful coach alongside Jorge Jesus and Flávio Costa.

He closed by wishing Filipe well, saying his story at the club is already written.
